The Donald J. Trump regime (pun intended), from 2017 to 2021, was mired by controversial headlines regarding U.S.-Africa relations. To some extent, Africa was not a priority in Trump’s foreign policy, but under his administration, several initiatives and engagements made significant impacts on the continent.

Trump’s administration initiated the Prosper Africa Initiative in 2019, which marked one of the achievements that have characterised economic relations. Prosper Africa was a Presidential-level national security initiative aimed at strengthening the strategic and economic partnership between the U.S. and Africa by catalysing transformative two-way trade and investment flows. This initiative is spotlighted for helping close to 1800+ deals across 49 African countries for a total estimated value of $86 billion in exports and investments since its launch in 2019.
